Student Chapter tours multi-story hostel building project

The Punjabi University, Patiala Student Chapter recently organized a tour of a multi-storied hostel building construction site at nearby Thapar University in Punjab, India.

The visit was great exposure for the student members, who learned about different facets of construction work, including varieties of concrete, shutters, and scaffoldings used in multistoried building projects
.

The Ain Shams University Student Chapter in Cairo, Egypt recently toured the construction site for a 57357 Hospital extension near the school.

Visiting engineer shares experience in sustainable sewer engineering 


The Australia Section recently co-hosted an event with the Water Panel of Engineers Australia, welcoming Ayanangshu Dey, Ph.D., C.Eng, M.ASCE, from Kolkata, India, for a lecture and lunch afternoon at Hawken Auditorium of the Engineering House in Brisbane.

In his presentation “Rehabilitation of Calcutta’s Victorian-age Sewers: A Benchmark in Sustainable Urban Regeneration,” Dey spoke about his work on an ambitious project to rehabilitate 130-year-old, major brick sewers in Kolkata.

 

PEC UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER

Vital knowledge provided through structural design series

The Student Chapter at PEC University of Technology, in Chandigarh, Indian, is hosting a Structural Design Series as part of its Students Interaction Program, running through April. The series challenges the students to use various software tools to complete a variety of structural design projects.

Tall buildings expert honored 


ASCE has honored Xilin Lu, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2017 Nathan M. Newmark Medal for his pioneering research in the development of dynamic testing, structural seismic design, and response control for tall buildings, as well as for his commitment to education and professional service.

Lu is an outstanding researcher and one of the world’s leading authorities in earthquake engineering. He was one of the first in China to embrace new technologies for earthquake hazard mitigation.

Advanced structural analysis expert named Fellow 


Fabio Biondini, Ph.D., C.Eng., F.ASCE, professor of structural engineering at Politecnico di Milano, in Milano, Italy, and a consultant engineer for problems in advanced structural analysis, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

California based geotechnical and earthquake engineer named Fellow 


Faiz I. Makdisi, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, principal engineer with SAGE Engineers Inc. in Oakland, CA, with over 39 years of specialized experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction. Makdisi received his bachelor of engineering degree in civil engineering from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in geotechnical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.

Pavement and geotechnical engineer named Fellow 


Hosam Salman, P.E., F.ASCE, a pavement and geotechnical engineer with over 23 years of professional experience in analysis, design, and management, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction. Salman holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Ain Shams University in Egypt and a Master of Engineering from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
