U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) pins the Purple Heart medal on Fred Jenness in a ceremony at Golden Valley, MN, city hall, where Jenness is a resident. The former Navy Seabee was a combat engineer supporting intelligence operations in Vietnam in December 1969 when his unit came under fire, wounding him in the leg. It was his intelligence work that led to the lapse in recognition. Past president of the state Section, Jenness remains an active member, including work on the 100-Year Centennial Committee. He retired in 2009 after a 34-year career with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.  Section website>>

MICHIGAN SECTION
In letter to editor, Section tells governor infrastructure creates jobs

As a response to Gov. Rick Snyder's State of the State address on Jan. 19, Michigan Section President-elect Carey Suhan wrote a letter to the editor that ran in the Lansing State Journal. "As the governor knows, the best way to create good paying jobs for Michiganders is to build a state that is open and competitive to businesses," Suhan wrote. "While the governor spoke of immigration policy, job training, and education as means for boosting businesses — he regrettably failed to mention anything about Michigan’s ailing infrastructure." Raise the Bar a hot topic of discussion at Region 3 Assembly

"A healthy debate took place" over ASCE's Raise the Bar initiative at the annual Region 3 Assembly in Chicago, reported Illinois Section President Lou Arrigoni in the Section's latest newsletter. A discussion included a “pro” perspective from former ASCE President Blaine Leonard and a “con” perspective from Region 3 Director John Frauenhoffer. Highlights of the discussion included a conclusion that "the Region 3 membership does not want the Raise the Bar effort to be totally abandoned. There is a feeling that there may be a better approach to implementing the initiative. ... Out of this discussion, a resolution was passed and forwarded to ASCE National’s Board of Direction expressing the Region’s concerns," Arrigoni wrote in his President's Notes.  Read newsletter>>  Section website>>
