REGION 4 NEWS New Faces of Civil Engineering demonstrate inspiring talent, service ASCE recently announced its 2016 New Faces of Civil Engineering, and two Region 4 members made the list. ASCE selects 10 New Faces in each of two categories – Professionals (age 30 and younger) and College (students) – as part of DiscoverE’s New Faces of Engineering program. Rajan Jha was honored in the Professionals category. Jha is a water resources engineer from India who has been active in the ASCE Virginia Section. North Carolina native Zane McGhee, a student at the University of South Carolina, was recognized in the College category.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER Purdue student wins Dream Big Contest grand prize Photo courtesy of Nathan Shellhamer Purdue University student Nathan Shellhamer won the grand prize in the ASCE Dream Big Contest. Purdue University junior Nathan Shellhamer was attending the Multi-Region Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh last month with his fellow members of the Boilermaker Student Chapter. Little did he know he was about to be announced as the top prize winner in ASCE’s Dream Big contest. Shellhamer won a trip for two to an international location shoot for the filming of the engineering IMAX epic, Dream Big. The trip will take him to either Dubai, Rome, or Venice, depending on the film’s shooting schedule. “I think it’ll be interesting from a student perspective,” he said. “You hear about these things in class, these big projects. So to get to go there and actually see them – and then on top of that to see how they’re filmed for the movie – to be a part of it and kind of see it firsthand, it’s going to be awesome.” Read more about Shellhamer, and keep up with the Purdue Student Chapter.

VIRGINIA SECTION N. Virginia engineer named to prestigious ENR list Four ASCE members were showcased on Engineering News-Record’s annual Top 25 Newsmakers list, including Matthew C. Farmer, P.E., M.ASCE, principal at Wiss, Janney Elstner Associates Inc. in Fairfax, VA. Read more about Farmer’s accomplishments.

VIRGINIA SECTION ASCE member leading the fight for clean water in Flint Virginia Tech professor and ASCE member Marc Edwards famously fought a decade ago to eliminate lead from the water of Washington, DC. Now he’s turned his attention to the water crisis in Flint, MI. Read more about this inspiring civil engineer.
