March 2016

Great outreach event or other activity? Let the whole Region know!

If you’re a local ASCE leader and your Section, Branch, Younger Member Group, or Student Chapter has staged any special events, engaged in outreach from grade-school kids to lawmakers, done charity work, fund raising or anything of the sort, let ASCEnews Weekly know and we may include it in next month’s Region report. You may already have written about it and posted pictures in your newsletter, website, or social media. Share the details and any photos at asce.org/localnews. Got questions? Write to submissions@asce.org.

Marta Alvarez, president of her firm, YCE Engineering and Surveying, was picked by ASCE as one of three “dream” prize winners in the Society’s Dream Big contest, celebrating the forthcoming IMAX film Dream Big: Engineering Wonders of the World.

The Ventura, CA, engineer won a Dream Big gala premiere event in her local community. “I think the film is something we need out there so people know what engineers do,” she said. “And I think this premiere will be really cool. REGION 9 NEWS
New Faces of Civil Engineering demonstrate inspiring talent, service

ASCE recently announced its 2016 New Faces of Civil Engineering, and two Region 9 members made the list. ASCE selects 10 New Faces in each of two categories – Professionals (age 30 and younger) and College (students) – as part of DiscoverE’s New Faces of Engineering program.

Elizabeth Ruedas, a design engineer in the City of Industry, CA, with a sizable fan base for her YouTube channel, was honored in the Professionals category. Cody Dodge, a construction engineering student at Cal State Long Beach, earned recognition in the College category.
