Great outreach event or other activity? Let the whole Region know!

If you’re a local ASCE leader and your Section, Branch, Younger Member Group, or Student Chapter has staged any special events, engaged in outreach from grade-school kids to lawmakers, done charity work, fund raising or anything of the sort, let ASCEnews Weekly know and we may include it in next month’s Region report. You may already have written about it and posted pictures in your newsletter, website, or social media. Share the details and any photos at asce.org/localnews. Got questions? Write to submissions@asce.org.

Leaders of South Korean engineers’ society visit ASCE headquarters in Virginia

ASCE

Sharing common interests about engineering licensure, leaders from the Korean Professional Engineers Association traveled to suburban Washington, DC, to visit ASCE headquarters in Reston, VA, and meet ASCE staff.  The delegation included, as shown above, KPEA President Ik Jun, Um; Vice President Hank Moon and General Manager of International Affairs Chea Ho, Yun.
KPEA gave a presentation on the state of professional engineers in Korea and the requirements they face for licensure.  ASCE presented its Raise the Bar initiative, a movement to increase the increase the educational requirements for licensure as a professional engineer.  Both KPEA and ASCE seek to continue their dialogue on licensure at future events such as the 7th Civil Engineering Conference in the Asian Region in September 2016.  While in the Washington, DC, area, KPEA also met with the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Bangalore-based civil engineering researcher wins ASCE’s 2015 Michel Award

The inventor of C-bar rebar, which significantly enhances the lifespan of concrete structures, Anil K. Kar, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, is the winner of the 2015 Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research. Kar is owner of Project Management Engineering Services India, one of the PM Group companies.
Kar holds several Indian and international patents. Among his many innovative and award-winning designs, Kar developed the C-bar, a rebar with a plain surface and a deformed axis, with its capacity to enhance the lifespan of concrete structures without having to incur any additional cost, and its potential to replace the present generation of high-strength steel rebars with surface deformations. Kar has more than 50 years’ experience in engineering management, research, analysis and design for structural systems, engineering for nuclear plant facilities, weapon design, and structural rehabilitation. Read more about Kar’s Michel Award-worthy achievements in ASCE News.
