REGION 10 NEWS Ecuador university seeking official ASCE student group status Courtesy ESPOL Civil Engineering Club With several activities conducted in the summer and fall, a civil engineering student club at the Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral university in Guayaquil, Ecuador, is working eagerly to qualify for sanctioning by ASCE as an official International Student Group. Events have included an introduction to civil engineering forum, a briefing on ABET accreditation, and an exploration of pavement engineering. Visit the club's Facebook page (in Spanish). |
REGION 10 NEWS For ASCE contest, Colombia emigrant shares his engineering dream of giving back globally ASCE members are sharing their engineering dreams, realized and sought, in hopes of winning a "dream" prize in the Society's contest celebrating production of the awe-inspiring, giant screen movie, Dream Big: Engineering Wonders of the World. "My dream of becoming a better engineer inspired me to come to the United States,” said Andres Torres, who was born and raised in Colombia and is now a senior engineer and project manager for Valmont Industries in Omaha. “After I earned my master’s degree I realized I wanted to stay here to do bigger things. I feel like I’m making a difference because I’m helping infrastructure in communities. I’m helping to make life better around the globe.” Contest prizes, to be drawn at random, include a trip to an international locale for a Dream Big film shoot, the chance to host a Hollywood-style Dream Big premiere, and a trip to Laguna Beach, CA, for an exclusive preview screening of the film. ASCE is producing Dream Big: Engineering Wonders of the World in association with MacGillivray Freeman Films, with the Bechtel Corporation as presenting sponsor.
