Palestine university moves toward official ASCE group status

Students and faculty in the civil engineering department of An-Najah University in Nablus, Palestine, are eager to launch an official ASCE International Student Group and have been working with the Society since last fall. As part of the process of establishing qualifications, the unofficial ASCE student chapter has been hosting a series of activities designed to inform and enlighten students about their careers ahead as civil engineers. Last October, the chapter hosted ASCE Transportation and Development Institute President Imad Al-Qadi, renowned transportation engineering scholar-researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The ASCE Distinguished Member talked with chapter members about graduate studies abroad, professional engineering registration, and the benefits of ASCE membership. Al-Qadi also gave a technical lecture on nondestructive testing and the application of ground penetrating radar for the evaluation of transportation structures.

This month, students got great advice on how to prepare for job interviews from an insider – Ma’moon Abu Rayyan, projects manager at the Palestine Engineers Association and head of recruitment in the engineering fellows program at Global Communities, formerly CHF International. Abu Rayyan explained the importance of a good curriculum vitae, or resume, and gave the students important tips they should consider while writing their CV. Visit the An-Najah University student group’s website.

If you know of a university’s civil engineering school that does not currently have an ASCE International Student Group and would benefit from one, write to Narecita Ibanez, senior coordinator of ASCE International Relations, at nibanez@asce.org.
