Student teams from China and Canada travel to U.S. for ASCE’s Concrete Canoe finals

A university from China and another from Canada each made the trek to ASCE’s 27th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition last weekend , held at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in Pennsylvania. Competing against 22 other teams with its canoe Maximus, the Université Laval, from Québec City, finished third overall, receiving a $1,500 scholarship and a trophy. See the final results.

The student team from Tongji University in Shanghai made a nearly 7,350-mile trip to compete; their canoe, the Operace, was named for the Chinese Peking Opera’s “Lianpu,” or “Opera Faces.” Read about the adventure of the first team from China to compete at Concrete Canoe in ASCE News. ASCE members aid feasibility study on subway for Costa Rican capital

Costa Rica’s capital city of San José suffers from has serious traffic problems. With a growing sentiment that it’s time for a modern upgrade to the city’s public transportation, ASCE Costa Rica members are serving on a committee analyzing the feasibility of a subway. The committee is supported by the Federated Society of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica, and the outcomes of its work will be presented to the Costa Rican government. Student group in Lebanon keeps up an active agenda of activities

The ASCE student chapter at Lebanese American University in Beirut, affiliated with the university’s School of Engineering, has engaged in a host of enlightening events that have included technical seminars, lectures on the history of civil engineering in Lebanon, and tours of current and historic Lebanese infrastructure, including a visit to Faqra, the most extensive Roman ruins in Lebanon, as seen in the above photo.
