President’s return visit builds ASCE connections in United Arab Emirates

Following a successful mission in March to meet with engineers and students in the United Arab Emirates, ASCE’s 2015 President Bob Stevens traveled back to the Middle Eastern nation last month, where the professionals and pros in training continue to welcome the guidance ASCE can provide.

Stevens took part in the school year finale meeting of ASCE’s International Student Group at the American University of Sharjah. As seen above, during one group photo with Stevens at center, he takes a selfie with group leadership. Stevens also toured the civil engineering school at the American University in Dubai, and delivered an address on megaprojects and a major conference of the UAE Society of Engineers. He shares details and relays other experiences from his trip in his President’s Perspective blog

ASCE member receives commendation from U.S. Marianas legislature


ASCE member Juan Cruz Tenorio, a retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineers colonel, was recently commended by the Marianas House of Representatives for his military and professional contributions in engineering.  Tenorio retired from the Corps in 1992, and has been part of engineering projects in communities across a number of U.S. territories in the Pacific.  Read more in the online edition of the Marianas Variety.

Canadian university joins in ASCE’s National Concrete Canoe Competition finals

Twenty-two teams of civil engineering students – among them École de technologie supérieure, of  Montreal, Quebec, Canada – converged on Clemson University in South Carolina to seek the title at ASCE’s 28th National Concrete Canoe Competition. Throughout the academic year, 215 universities’ teams spent thousands of hours researching, designing and constructing their unique concrete canoes, aiming for the right combination of creativity, knowledge, and teamwork to win their regional competition and secure a place in the finals.  École de technologie supérieure came in a solid fourth overall.  Complete results, photos, video>>
